At kasing2, we view our zine as a gathering place for Visayan voices—whether they are speaking for the first time or sharing a story that has already found a home elsewhere.
To keep our community fair and transparent, we operate under the following terms:
1. Cultural and Intellectual Sovereignty, Ownership & Copyright
You own your work. By publishing with us, you are not “giving away” your rights. You retain full copyright of your writing, art, or audio; we are simply a platform for your expression.
2. Non-Exclusive Reprint Rights
We primarily ask for Non-Exclusive Reprint Rights. This means:
- Permission to Publish: You grant us permission to feature your work in our print zine and on our digital platforms (including our website and social media for promotion).
- Creative Freedom: You are free to publish this work elsewhere—on your personal blog, in other journals, or in future collections—at any time, even while it is live on our site.
- Previously Published Work: If your work has appeared on your personal website or another platform, we are honored to reprint it. We only ask that you hold the necessary rights to share it with us.
If you’re looking for a clear, no-nonsense breakdown of how these rights work globally, this guide from the late Ursula K. Le Guin is helpful as it breaks down contract jargon without talking down to creators.
For a more technical deep-dive into specific publishing terms, this glossary is an excellent resource for protecting your interests as participants in the global creative and publishing sector.
3. Digital Integrity & SEO
We respect that your work has a life before and after it reaches us.
- Canonical Links: For work previously published online (blogs, social media, or other journals), we use canonical tags in our WordPress backend. This ensures kasing2 acts as a megaphone for your existing presence rather than a replacement for it. Learn more about canonical tags here.
- Direct Credit: Every piece will include a clear credit line. Reprints will link directly back to the original source.
4. Archival, Sovereignty & Removal
- The Archive: We view our zine as a lasting record of Visayan culture. However, we do not believe in “locking” work away. Your work remains in our digital archives as a record of our community’s history, but this does not limit your right to share, sell, or reprint the work elsewhere.
- Non-Exclusivity by Default: Our publication of your work is non-exclusive. If a future publisher—regardless of where they are in the world—claims your work is “previously published,” this policy serves as proof that you have retained all rights and are simply allowing us to host a copy.
- Honoring the Handshake: If you need a piece removed from our digital site (e.g., for a book deal requiring exclusivity), contact us at kasing2.mag@gmail.com. We handle these requests with care and strive to do so within 1-2 weeks.
5. Future Use
If you republish your work after it appears with us, we ask for a courtesy credit stating:
“This work was featured in kasing2, a print and digital magazine by Visayans, for Visayans.”
